Development Watch: Adding to Chaos in Dumbo
Ever try to park on the street on a weekday in Dumbo? Humanly impossible, due in part to the lack of parking spaces and in part to the massive amounts of construction going on. Dumbo has a lot going for it, but we don't know how people are going to put up with living on a massive work site for the next five years, albeit one with an increasing number of charming amenities. Adding to the chaos is this new building going up on Water between Adams and Washington. Anyone got the 411 on the project? GMAP

Originally, it was owned and being developed by Guttman. I heard he sold it though, but can't confirm that. Scarano is the architect.

monthly parking isn't that expensive there

All of the newly constructed buildings in DUMBO have parking facilities. Enough to satisfy the residence of the building and then some. F train a block away, I would be more concerned with NON-DUMBO-ITES swooning to this area parking, then taking the train, trying to cut down on the commute to the city. Any closer and they might as well take a boat across the river, or wallk the bridge, both of them.
GO DUMBO!!!!

i know someone with a space in dumbo for $300/month. they live in brooklyn heights.

walked by that construction site on friday, and couldn't believe how close it is to the manhattan bridge.
if you open up the windows on the higher floors, you can read the ny post over the shoulders of q train commuters.

the real question is how are all these Dumbo residents going to fit on the York Street F train platform?

Get over yourself with your "I have a right to park easily and cheaply" approach to getting around this great borough. Take the bus or train, or walk or bike like everyone else, or realize that the extremely valuable real estate that is on street parking should and will cost you (either in money or in time looking for it). People with young children who also lead very busy lives do it all the time. When you choose to drive, you make it more unpleasant and more difficult for those of us who are doing the right thing to go about our business. Shame on you.

i hate it when people say "shame on you" in posts - the moral police peanut gallery.

ever tried to park in Brooklyn Heights during the week? it's hard. people try to drive in from LI and subway it the rest of the way.
Posted by: Anonymous at June 26, 2006 12:08 PM
I agree. NYC, especially the areas of Brooklyn profiled on this board, have excellent public transit. Enough with the imported suburban mentality of needing a car - take the bus or train. Plenty of people manage just fine with that.

Somehow I doubt too many people drive from LI to BKlyn Hts to park and then ride subway. Can't find space anytime in Bklyn Hts.
Also parking (garage/lots) to me doesn't seem so different then place in midtown that I sometimes use (about $15 for day-yes I know there are more expensive lots in middle of midtown but I park in garage around 1st ave/E54th). And spare me criticism of driving to work - it is occasional when I will be leaving directly from work to go upstate instead of taking subway home 1st to retrieve car.

Anybody have anything valuable to add re: the project being developed as opposed to parking conundrums or the morals behind driving to work?
Posted by: Anonymous at June 26, 2006 1:41 PM
I once saw a car parked! (just thought I would add my 2 cents to this dreadful talkbalk.
Posted by: Anonymous at June 26, 2006 1:52 PM
I too have seen a car parked! I have also seen cars parked!

there have been plenty of studies and sure enough they do drive to BH and subway in. BH and Fort Greene. It's why these are the 2 neighborhoods being considered for resident parking stickers

man, this thread is lame (and I'm a 10-year DUMBO resident with a car)
I have heard from a couple of people that the building in question is not residential, but I can't verify it.
Posted by: omacadams at June 26, 2006 2:31 PM
on Scarano website - he lists project for Water St. and on city DofB site on applications for 133 Water St.
I think it said 20 story residential.
Wonder since is Scarano - has this site come to standstill like many of his other projects?
Posted by: Anonymous at June 26, 2006 4:37 PM
Wired link says 12 stories only. Agreed with 11:41 AM - it is really close to the Manhattan Bridge - and those trains are loud, and frequent.
Posted by: Anonymous at June 26, 2006 4:48 PM
u r right. 12 story - 52 units.
Posted by: Anonymous at June 26, 2006 5:01 PM
Definitely residential. The developers group will market it... expected completion is end of year...
Posted by: Anonymous at June 26, 2006 9:52 PM
There is a newly (less than 5 years I think) constructed building on the Manhattan side just north of the bridge that has to be less than 10 feet from the bridge. I couldn't believe when it was going up, but there it is, finished and occupied.
Posted by: Anonymous at June 27, 2006 2:11 AM
So DUMBOites...is construction still in progress or has it been stopped like other Scarano designed projects?
See construction crews lately?

just walked by -- workers are working. G.D.Y. Builders of Jamaica, Queens is listed on the permit.

funny you guys are all hounding this guy scarano wuth this 12 story building, when there are giant towers going up all around that one... perhaps they are obstructing your vision in seing the light and realizing what is actually going on: this website's personal vendetta against an architect with no apparent reason! so tired of reading this crap! there is only one brownstone in DUMBO anyway, so stay out.
