Clinton Hill Forum on Monday Chance for Action

We just got an email alerting us to the fact that there will be a Candidate's Forum on Monday night at 6:30 at Brown Memorial Church at Washington and Gates. Our source says she thinks Roger Green (State Assemblyman who lives on St. James) and Tish James (who lives on Lafayette) will both be there. Maybe this would be a good time for an initial show of resolve from the community regarding the drug/crime issues in Clinton Hill. Any have creative ideas for how to best organize something impactful for the event? Anyone know for sure which pols will be in attendance?

I'll definately go and be a rabble rouser. BrownBomber, are you in? We could even meet for drinks before or after to discuss strategy (I'm a teetotaler, so how about Tillies?).

I'm in! Most definitely!

Why not just make comments during the Q&A. Is there really a need to organize something "impactful"? Might not be the most successful plan if you really want to get your point across.

Or maybe you can go and shoot up the place-- that will definitely get their attention.

I like the fact that you're doing something proactive, but is storming the forum the right approach?

Have you gotten a bunch of your neighbors (or readers) together and asked L. James for a 15 minute meeting first?

I think "impactful" would be to be a strong and steady presence over the long haul, not showing up once and yelling the loudest.

Geez, we're not talking about a sit-in or anything...just soliciting ideas.

I think the idea of the 15 minute meeting beforehand is a good idea. I don't think anyone is talking about storming the building. I think it is a good idea to show up in numbers and let Tish and whomever else know that this is an issue their district is concerned about.

I think we have to get a group of people who can commit to going and then ask her for a meeting. We have two so far, any other takers?

I also know some of the people who used to be members of the Cambridge Place Action Coalition when they were more active. I might be able to convince some of them to come.

Shahn,
Do you want to be the point person for Monday?

Posted by: Brownstoner at June 2, 2006 11:32 AM

You have another taker - as mentioned to Brownstoner, fyi, Mr. Green is currently running for Congress and is a long-standing resident of the neighborhood.

Posted by: alex at June 2, 2006 11:55 AM

I'll try to make it, but will probably be on the late side. I don't know Shahn or the BrownBomber (I haven't made it to any of the meetings of the square glasses), so I'll look for you Brownstoner?

That aside, I think that steady pressure is the way to go - show up at whatever meeting we can AND try to get private meeting with Tish James AND try to get other neighborhood organizations involved.

I think that any informal meeting to discuss issue prior to the Clinton Hill Forum would be best held on the weekend - say Sunday afternoon -as most people would not be able meet beforehand on Monday due to work committments.

Please count me in. I would normally be inclined to take a more laid-back approach as clinton hillbilly suggests, but as a comparatively longtime resident of CH, that simply hasn't worked very well.

Some well thought-out talking points, delivered clearly but firmly, are in order.

Would people like to meet on Sunday afternoon? Outpost Cafe maybe? If so, what time would be good? 4pm?

Posted by: lp at June 2, 2006 2:29 PM

That's a good idea. Just hope they don't have techno blasting like last time we were there...

Posted by: Brownstoner at June 2, 2006 3:20 PM

So 4pm at Outpost Cafe on Sunday? Done.

Posted by: BrownBomber at June 2, 2006 3:22 PM

Pay a couple of the drug dealers from the hood to ply their wares in front of the church before and during the meeting.

Ok, Jon B, I know what you look like so I'll be able to figure out where to go when I get there. I'll where a black t-shirts with one of those evil looking white snowmen on it. Hah! Just kidding. See you and BrownBomber there on Sunday, and anyone else who is interested.

Posted by: lp at June 2, 2006 3:46 PM

I'll be there at Outpost on Sunday too. I wear my evil white snowman on the inside, thank you ("Once Were Warriors" reference anyone?) I'll be wearing my "International Terrorist" t-shirt, the one with George W. Bush on it, so there will be no question who I am.
