Mystery Tents in Dumbo

tents
What the heck goes on in all those tents behind this yellow wall at the corner of Front and Gold in Dumbo? Is it a restaurant or some kind of store? GMAP

It's a Buddhist Temple from what I understand.

"Is it a restaurant or some kind of store?"

Why always the assumption of commerce, grasshopper?

Multiple tents suggests that it's something other than someone's backyard, no?

I forget where I heard/read it, but it was apparently a used car lot that was turned into a Buddhist temple. Cool thing to have in the nabe, too bad it looks so... well, like a used car lot turned into a temple...

It's the Dorje Ling Buddhist Center

the tents are probably for this weekend's Kalachakra Initiation
27-29 May 2006

maybe they'll have a public viewing of a Sand Mandala if they're making one. Should be amazing.

Here's their website

that's also vinegar hill, not DUMBO. pretty cool adaptive re-use IMHO. once, while walking by, i saw some young monks playing basketball with their robes hanging below their t-shirts. only in brooklyn will you find buddhist monks playing b-ball in an old gas station!

These are Tibetan style tents and prayer flags... you can see a bit of what they look like in tibet in this image: http://www.mexicanpictures.com/archives/2005/09/sisters.html

Hilarious post! My fiance refused to consider 99 Gold St. b/c of the eyesore that is the building in question. I always thought it looked like an old fast-food joint. Or, you know, a used car dealership converted into a Buddhist temple. Maybe some of the monks will snap up studios at 99 Gold - they got a basketball court in that ish, B!
