I Am The Cake Man, Goo Goo G'Joob

cake
With the youngest Brownstoner turning 1 this past weekend, Mrs. B opted to give the famous Cake Man a try. The red velvet cake with white frosting--which set us back a cool 55 bucks--easily fed 20 or so people and we're still working our way through the left-overs. The Cake Man is located at 708 Fulton Street in Fort Greene.

$55 for a cake in FG?

Kel, its obvious you've never tasted a Cake Man Raven cake. $55 is a pittance for that slice of heaven...

no, you don't understand the following this guy has. the cake man charges 55 for a cake because he damn well can, some Saturdays or Sundays I pass there and there's literally a line down the street. before I knew what it was I thought there was a party going on, I later found out it was just a bunch of people waiting on cake.

$55 for a cake in FG and SOOOOOOO worth it. Seriously, the best red velvet cake I've ever had, and I'm born and raised in the South. I live in NJ and drive to FG to Get.That.Cake!!!!

Cake Man really needs to find a larger space so that he can expand his business. The demand is clearly there, but his current shop is much to small.

I've never been impressed by Cake Man's cakes. I don't get the hype. But I think the guy himself is great.

$55 for a cake that feeds over 20 people is really reasonable. Cheaper cake=cheaper ingredients (like scads of shortening)=bad tasting cake.

these cakes (esp frosting) taste like lard to me.

Posted by: Anonymous at May 2, 2006 10:45 AM

yeah, but lard is soooooooo good.

What, you didn't get him to comp you the cake in exchange for the blog post? For shame!

my only complaint with the cake man is that crumbs from his red velvet cake stained by brick patio. only after some elbow grease and rainstorms did it go away. but the cake was worth it!

There's enough red food coloring in that cake to pickle a baby, but it does taste SO good!

Cake Man was featured on a Food TV show a few weeks ago. They featured a Fort Greene baker! My mouth was watering. . .

The ABSOLUTE BEST Red Velvet Cake anywhere. $55 per cake is a steal, considering it's $5 for a lone Slice! Albeit that one slice can feed a small family. He definitely does NOT need to expand, because I'm sure it would lose his personal touch.

Anyone remember his float from the West Indies Day Parade two years ago? It was very amusing.

B- now that you are learning about Bay Ridge, check out the cupcake store on 92nd and 3rd. Definate kid pleasers.

I od' on these cakes last summer due to being pregnant and them tasting sooooo good. My husband went on many runs to cakeman for me and of course he would get a slice for himself. Well after a 4 day binge, my hubby (who is a hypochondriac) calls me to say that there is blood in his stool. Duh honey it is the cake. :-)

once i went to cake man on a saturday morning, there was no cake! why? because it is so damn good they had sold out! run and be happy that the cake is ONLY $55, he should charge more.

So glad somebody else thinks this is the Emperor's New Cake! I'm a home baker for 20 yrs, a worshipper of Rose Levy Berenbaum and Maida Heatter, and a passionate cake freak...and the "famous" red velvet cake was the most flavorless shortening-based nothin' I've ever tasted. Moist, alarmingly red (thanks, I was amazed to learn, to a ladle of food coloring instead of some intriguing ingredient)...and flavorless. But it is RED. Maybe you have to have Southern DNA to "get" it...I will confess, I don't "get" grits, either...

I went to the Cake Man for a cake to take to a holiday party two weeks before Christmas and they had not a crumb in the whole place. They looked at me as if I had two heads because I didn't get the memo that I would have to order 2 weeks in advance to get a cake that wouldn't be ready until after Christmas. I thought it was a poor business practice to have a retail shop open with no product and haven't been back since. I mean what's the point of having staff behind the counter to tell you that there are no cakes and won't be any for 2 weeks.

Actually the Cakeman is looking to expand. He's shown some interest in PLG. I personally spoke with him about a few sites on Empire Blvd.
