Five Borough Bike Tour Yesterday

Participants in the five borough bike tour yesterday congregated at Commodore John Barry Park at Park Avenue and Ashland Place celebrating the Spring weather and snarling traffic between Kent Avenue and the Brooklyn Bridge (cue the anti-driving comments). The tour started in Tribeca and ended at the State Island Ferry Terminal. According to The Post, 30,000 people turned out. Did any readers take part in the tour?

no, but we struggled through the brooklyn biathlon in prospect park yesterday at 8am.

2.2 run, 11 mi bike and 2.2 run..

Bikers are traffic. Pedestrians are traffic. Drivers are traffic. Buses are traffic. Trains are traffic. Scooters are traffic.

Sounds like bike, pedestrian and train traffic was moving smoothly Sunday, and that drivers were just stupid enough (as usual) to pick the wrong way to get around.

i have done this tour. It is fun ...once. Too many cyclists. If you are an avid cyclist this is not for you. It is a controled pace and if someone has an accident there are huge pile ups! It is fun to ride on a car free FDR though!

I did the tour for the first time yesterday. I was told it was more crowded than it was in prior years, but I have no point of reference. It is a lot of fun -- 40 miles mostly flat miles (those approaches to the bridges can be killers). It is crowded and can be dangerous. I saw several nasty accidents (including some of the people I rode with), but the organizers had it covered. I also saw the horrible (auto) traffic that was created, albeit for a good cause. Riding on the FDR, across bridges, and through the streets of this great city was wonderful and I'd like to do it again.

First time rider.
Agree with 11:25 comment that it's not for avid cyclists.

It was a total mob scene!
Though it must be said Bike (ahem.. Walk) NY did as good a job as can be expected organizing such a huge event, i'm probably not going to do it again. We spent a total of at least 90 minutes walking at various bottlenecks.
There were also so many people that we didn't start moving until almost 9:00, and that's because we hopped out of the clotted mass, rode up on the Hudson path, and cut in at Chambers St. Even then, we were so far back that the mandatory cutoff in Queens had been activated when we got up there. Meh.

Really i just wanted to bike over the V-N.
Critical Mass is way more fun.

God you people are lame. I've done the tour for 3 years and this one was probably the best yet, which I know doesn't say much for past years. If you're looking for the peloton, its not for you. Stop being so namby-pamby get grow a set before you get on your bike.

OH, yes the waiting was wonderful

"bite new york" better than bike new york, but more like lame organizers bite bikers

the wait at the beginning was stupid, but once things got started we figured we were on our way

How could they possibly organize something that doesn' allow for the free flow of bikers.

before we got to central park we were caught in a clog for well over 30 minutes

excruciating
