Brownstoner Garden: Trellis Time
Our contractor mounted the trellis, so to speak, as well as a couple more sections of the fence this weekend but didn't get around to too much else. We're hoping the weather holds and the next couple of days will be highly productive.

Having spent a little time in the garden areas abutting your newly renovated space, I cannot overestimate the importance of ensuring proper drainage in your garden. The mosquito population can be quite nasty and, considering all the rain we've had, we all might be battling the nasty critters in the coming months.

4 or 5 french drains have been built into the yard. Enough, you think?

With repellent, you should be safe. Of course, there's no accounting for the neighbors and their standing water.

The bricked part of our backyard always floods in the rain - the surface does dry up within an hour or so after a rainstorm, but I can't help thinking the mosquitos are taking advantage somehow.
Are the french drains very hard to install? Trying to figure out how cost-prohibitive it would be to put them in a finished yard. Would prefer that to getting a Mosquito Magnet...

Brownstoner--How have you negotiated the "good neighbor" fencing issue? I see from the picture you have both front and back of the fence facing your yard. I know you wrote that you were working in coordination with neighbors ... that is probably the most neighborly way. The trellis over the "back" of the stockade works quite well to make the back look finished.

What's a french drain?

I'm pretty sure it's related to a French tickler.

has anyone used one of those mosquito magnets? Do they work?

A french drain is a drain which looks like a trench, and is usually filled with stones and other stuff. It prevents the buildup of puddles.
