Blue Angels Buzzing Brooklyn Rooftops

restaurant
Here's a fresh shot of the Blue Angels warming up for their Memorial Day acrobatics taken from a rooftop on Hicks Street. "They are flying just about 100-200 feet off the rooftops (or so it seems)," reports our man on the roof. "They are no noisier than the BQE for me, so heh, they can knock themselves out all day if they want."

I wish they could post a sign or something -- this freaks me out every year until I finally remember it's Fleet Week.

Gave me a start too - I can't be the only New Yorker who still freaks at low-flying planes. :(

ditto! I had no idea why a big blue plane was buzzing my roof until I logged on here. didn't need a second cup of coffee after that,,,

Ha! I was trying to figure out why LGA was being rerouted over cobble hill. It freaked my dog out - big time.

they tell me when a movie is shooting a week ahead of time, but jets flying right over my roof I have to figure out on my own...

aren’t you proud that your tax money is speeded so smart.

Thank you for the explanation! I was a little freaked out too...

Posted by: lc at May 25, 2006 12:18 PM

I truly panicked - shades of September 11th.

(I'm on Willow @ Cranberry.)

I thought of 9/11, too. It was unbelievably loud - shook the rooftops here. For a minute, I thought the electro-magnetic pulse Desmond released on last night's LOST was having some real-world reverberations.

Likewise--I had no clue what the hell was going on. I do think post 9-11 it would be good to give the communities they're practicing over a head's up.

There was a group of very loud bi-planes that also flew over lower Manhattan in formation. Any idea what they were?

if you think that noise is bad, wait until the proposed park comes to the quaint heights area, not to mention the influx of people going to Ikea and Fairway in Red Hook - it's gonna loose it's charm.

I watched them make a few passes up and down the Hudson River this morning from my workplace on 11th ave. Six jets in tight formation. Quite impressive, really. The rest of their party is over in Iraq making sure there's plenty of fuel for more such exhibitions.

Cheap shot Hal.And you should be impressed- those are some of the top pilots in the military. And guess who is also ensuring the gas supply for your SUV?

Posted by: Anonymous at May 25, 2006 2:15 PM

I love it when they buzz hte roof tops. hehe i been watching this since my childhood for 20 yrs. i grew up in brooklyn . it was one of the only cool things that happen in brooklyn back than hehe.

Posted by: armchair_warrior at May 25, 2006 2:28 PM

sad day in the heights with all that noise.

Posted by: anmal at May 25, 2006 2:30 PM

Mr. Anonymous, you're right about those top pilots, you're right that I'm impressed (as I stated), and you're right about the Iraq war being about the oil. The only thing you got wrong was my car: it's a '94 Saturn. It still gets 28 city/34 highway. What do you drive?

P.S. I'm proud of our military. I'm not proud of the way they've been abused and misused by their Commander in Cheif.

I forwarded this link to my wife who called me this morning about how our house had been buzzed by fighter jets. I just thought I'd share her response:

"So that is what that was. Scared the living sh*t out of me. I was actually trying to decide where to go run for cover..."

I don't drive. DOn't own a car and if you are so proud of them you certainly didn't make it sound that way. And I totally agree about the way they have been used and abused.

They almost gave my poor cat a heart attack.

Posted by: Anonymous at May 25, 2006 4:58 PM

They should give us some notice about fireworks too. I climbed onto my roof last night just in time to see the end of a pretty cool fireworks display. That must have been for fleet week too.

I work for a major news organization and we were sent a press release earlier in the week stating that there were going to be military fly-overs. You may have noticed other planes flying next to the f-16's and c-130's, they were filming/photographing the formations for an unspecified reason.
