Fifth Avenue Eats: Gotta Make the Donuts

shop
We love the old-school look of this place (we see charm here--as opposed to the magazine store on Ninth Street) but can't say we've broken bread there. We're sure some of you have though. What's the deal? GMAP

Great cheap breakfast with family waitstaff. Love it for the basic diner food to take care of a hangover.

This place is excellent--affordable, unpretentious, tasty.

I was a prisoner of Park Slope for a few months, and this was the one nice respite from all the strollers and self-satisfied yuppies. It's cramped, uncomfortable, has bad coffee, but good basic diner fare... perfect...

So don't you guys think this more worthy of preservation than the corner of Ninth and Fifth?

I was a feature film location scout in NYC for years. No matter how many times I tried to get permission to film here from the owner, he refused. He didn't care how much money it was. He said he couldn't do that to his customers. For that, he has my respect.

Oops, location scout was thinking of the donut shop on 7th ave near 9th St. Glad I'm not scouting anymore...

I don't think it's closing. They just aren't open all day long during the week. Great for cheap breakfast sitting at the counter style.

My son and I used to get donuts there every morning. I don't think they make them there but they're good all the same. It's owned by a lovely Greek couple and they open very early and close early afternoon. No tables, you just sit at the counter with lots of people who haven't yet cashed out and hang out all morning reading the Daily News.

Perfectly awful food, greasy eggs, soaked in bad butter toast, dismissive service, cheap - everything a NYC coffee shop should and used to be!

they actually *do* allow an occasional photo shoot -- they showed me the pix once . . .

the kids run the parent's biz now - lovely people, decent cheap breakfast, and yes, they close in the early afternoon, after they sell off the leftover doughnuts three for a dolla
