New York Mag: Brooklyn as an Adjective

coverIn case you didn't leave your house yesterday, our beloved borough was the subject of yet another cover story, this time in New York Magazine. The issue focuses on Brooklyn style, in the process touching on furniture design, art, interiors and fashion. Our favorite pieces? The story of an East Village family's renovation of two floors of a Brooklyn Heights brownstone and the story of a native son's return to his family home in Flatbush. Did you learn anything new or interesting from the issue?

not much...there are ppl who understand brooklyn, those who are on the fence and then there are those never will. this issue may tip the scales for the 'fencers' in terms of some manhattanites taking the train over to 'discover' it one weekend.

I, too, loved the renovation of the brooklyn heights duplex. The stories, however, left much to be desired. Also funny that they choose to focus on mostly all things "New White Brooklyn", meaning little of the local culture and flavor was included. All centered on new transplants and the White art/design crew. And I'm white before anyone attacks. Just a comment. A lot more to brooklyn other than the black-rimmed glasses set.

The Flatbush house I believe is in Caton Park (part of the greater Ditmas Park area or whatever you want to call it), on the corner of Church and I think Marlborough. It's a huge place, with the entrance angled to face the corner.

Is there more to those articles that I'm missing?

They're just short puff pieces with little substance. I don't think they'll change anyones attitude about Brooklyn.

I just picked up the issue this morning, and on a quick scan, it looks like the typical NYMag narrow-focus article about a borough the writers don't know very much about (I used to work for its publisher, so I can say that). I think what most people are looking for in an all-encompassing story about Brooklyn in all its glory won't be found in NYMag. But I'll read it anyway...there's always something new to be learned.

i don't think any ny mag readers really care about any ethnic eateries or enclaves that they will find in brooklyn.

I care about ethnic eateries and enclaves! Yesterday I was thinking I was in a rut, food-wise. I'm looking forward to the outdoor food vendors starting up again in Red Hook at the soccer field. I'm lame about finding new dining options, yet nothing makes me happier. Any favorites?

is there an echo in here???

The BHill house is on Pacific between Hoyt and Bond. No surprise that NYMag would concentrate on the GRUPS who moved to Brooklyn. See link below for grup article. http://newyorkmetro.com/news/features/16529/index.html

I enjoyed the 10 minutes I spent paging through it. It's New York Magazine; short puff pieces and decent listings is what they do.

New York magazine is nothing more than real-estate porn. Calling it "shallow" gives it too much credit. I especially love how they have almost no Brooklyn restaurants in their dining guide but then when they choose to do that little "focus box" on a new restaurant, 8 out of ten times, it's in Brooklyn.

Just clicked on the link and saw the photo of the "crew". What's with all the long faces? Smile folks, you get to live in Brooklyn! Don't worry, we'll still take you seriously...I couldn't agree more with Anon 10:13 about the vendors at the Red Hook Pool. Yum.

Anon 10:13, you should check out chowhound.com. If you think people on this blog love to argue, wait til you get a load of that site!

I hate New York Magazine.

If you live in Brooklyn, you shouldn't read New York magazine, because no matter how much they write about how "great" Brooklyn is, their ultimate agenda is to make you feel inferior you don't live in Manhattan. Why would you want to put yourself through that?

Posted by: west at April 25, 2006 12:48 PM

why would anyone pay attention to what ny mag has to say and have it affect their self esteem? the magazine is just fun to read for its stupidity. i read the post too for page 6, pure entertainment.

Brooklyn is becoming a boomtown and that's a good thing for all Brooklynites. New stores and restaurants are coming here. Schools are getting better and streets are getting safer.

i don't want to be a groove stomp on the brooklyn parade. but these glossy magazines and pr mavens are acting like we just floated up and tied our boats to the bridge last week.

i'm all for the shops and eateries to get their due. we've all busted our butts to scrape together the resources to make them happen. it just seems like the spirit that created them is getting lost in the hype.

brooklyn's working parts are what makes it so amazing. people have been here for centuries making this borough what it is today. just hope that perspective doesn't get lost in all the new names we're suddenly being called.
