Sugar Crash in Bedford Stuyvesant

We stumbled across this menu on Flick'r and was wondering whether this place is as good as it sounds! Who's been?

Yes it is. If Fort Greene/Clinton Hillers want to sample the sweet potato cheesecake, they can usually get it at the Java Dave's coffee shop on Lafayette between Carlton and Cumberland. But Shakoor's is even smalller than that shop, just a counter and small sellection of some yummy pie and cake.

Without a doubt, this is a slammin' cheesecake! Besides other great baked goods,Shakoor's offers delicious soul food dishes as well. Plus, the vibes are always warm and friendly. I like this business alot.

Had a great sweet potato pound cake at Solomon's Porch on Stuyvesant last weekend. I really want to like that place, but what is up with the service? I like a casual vibe as much as the next person but when you order something and 10 minutes later still don't have it but the one person working there is having a looooong chat with someone, it's just frustrating.

Solomon's Porch is an interesting place. I to have visited and the food is not that good nor is the service. The crowd is nice on jazz nights but, if it's more than 10 people, you better bring your own food!!!! Maybe as the hood comes up so will the porch.

Their sweet potato cheesecake and sweet potato pound cake is incredible. Shakoor is a master baker who does everything from scratch. He runs the joint with his wife who's as sweet as can be. If Shakoor happens to be working on something new, he'll probably give you a piece just to get your opinion.
Even though you can get their cheesecake at Java Dave's, I'd just take the B26 down to their shop on Halsey where the prices are cheaper and the selection much bigger. Their storefront is tiny but their kitchen is three times as large as their primary money maker is dessert catering (check out the celeb customer photographs on the wall.)
As blasphemous as it sounds, I now have a new rule for entertaining out-of-towners: take the tourists to Junior's, take friends and family to Shakoor's. ;)

Solomon's porch recently redid their entire menu, and apparently the service too. Still a casual vibe and BYOW, but nice entrees now.
