Restaurant's Move To Bring More Celebs to CG
New York Magazine's got the scoop on the next culinary coup for the County of Kings: Cult brunch-master Kenny Shopsin is moving his eponymous restaurant to Carroll Gardens. After 24 years in the West Village, Shopsin’s is moving, as far as the magazine can figure, mostly for the cheaper rent. The restaurant's devotees are sure to follow: "I went to the one on Bedford and Morton [and] I went to the one on Bedford and Carmine," said Drew Barrymore. "I guess I’m headed to Brooklyn!” If you're really interested, pick up a copy of I Like Killing Flies, the 2004 documentary about the eatery and its proprietors and some its more colorful customers.

I live near the place that just closed on Bedford and Carmine. This guy has some serious PR connections. I never say many people eating at either restaurant, yet he somehow gets these huge articles written about him in the NY Times.

Anyone know where in CG they are moving to?

Pinch me I must be dreaming. Drew Barrymore faviorite brunch place is coming to Brooklyn, wow. Does she use their facilities too or does she like to wait until she gets home?
Who cares. One of the reasons I love BK is that I can generally aviod this type of Page 6, vapid nonsense. Show me a pic of Heath Ledgers house, whatever, but please put an quick end to glorifying these empty-headed coked out "stars".

Um, I think that Brownstoner had his tough firmly in his cheek when he made this post, or I'm I giving him more credit, for a dry wit, than he has?

Are you kidding? We take this celebrity stuff extremely seriously. We'll be dropping everything else to hide out paparazzi-style outside Shopsin's on the off chance that Drew shows up. Can't think of a better use of time!
Posted by: Brownstoner at March 29, 2006 3:06 PM
Celebrities like the place, and huge articles are written about him, because Kenny Shopsin is a fucking genius in the kitchen.

If Da Silvano moved to BK, I'd be excited. If Batali opened a joint in FG, I'd be psyched. But this? Celebrity refuse? ugh
Posted by: Anonymous at March 29, 2006 3:22 PM
Issa,
Keep spinning that PR wheel, baby! Make daddy proud!
I'll bet Shopsin's does well in Brooklyn. There's nothing Brooklynites love more than something that came from Manhattan.
Food quality doesn't matter to em -- just cool factor.

woah, woah. Shopsin's is not celebrity refuse, and Kenny and family have certainly never catered to celebs. They're assholes to everyone. But Kenny does cook some of the more interesting food around. And it was a tragedy when his wife died as they were opening the second location. This is real New York stuff.

they're assholes to everyone but we should be sympathetic to his loss? excuse me as I kiss the sky... maybe I'm just not very sensitive.

They're some real mongrels on the blog. Bitter and ulcer-ridden. I've never seen so much sarcasm and player-hatin in my life. And they all rear their ugly heads whenever something that they want but can't have gets posted on this site.

oh my god, you bloggers get nastier by the day.....

It's called humor. Without it you just sit in the office and look forward to retirement.
The great thing about blogs like this one is that you can be brutally honest, or even lie, and it doesn't matter.
Maybe you should move back to Iowa, homeboy!

Folks this is big news. Not kidding! Kenny is an amazing cook. You can't believe how amazing this is. Celebs go there because they know where the good hangs and eats are to be found because they have so much time on their hands. The last time I saw the amazing Chris Whitley smile was at Shopsin's. It's a great place. Just don't insist on the window seat. More dangerous than going to the soup n*zi. And much more fun.

"There's nothing Brooklynites love more than something that came from Manhattan."
Loved this- do any Brooklynites actually come from Brooklyn these day!!?!?!? NO! They are all coming from Manhattan. Next article on that page in NY MAG was about Ms Della Femina "happening" on a little place in the hts which she traded her place across from Grace Church in Manhattan for.

My opinion: Issa 3:09pm, willingd 3:24pm, and
anon 8:23 pm are all the same poster.
Somebody is trying to hype this place to you folks!

anon 8:23 is me. Not the people up above. You guys should all check out the place in the Village. This guy doesn't need or want press. Really. He's a kook who cooks really well and has built up a following. Or as Kenny would probably say, "Don't go!"
Posted by: Anonymous at March 29, 2006 9:59 PM
I'm not hyping the place.
You have to go try it right now!
WHATEVER

Even though the NYMAg piece played up the celeb angle, that is not the point of the place at all. It is a family-run joint with an eccentric owner and I am so happy it is moving here. Much better than another CVS or Dunkin Donuts!

where in CG?
Posted by: aug at March 30, 2006 4:48 PM
Why is everybody such a jerk on brownstoner?
Posted by: Anonymous at March 30, 2006 9:52 PM
For the record: Kenny very definitely does not want the publicity.
Back in the early 90's, he begged the regulars not to fill out Zagat's forms promoting the old Morton St. place. When Tim Zagat (another old regular) listed him anyway, he banned Tim from the restaurant for 6 months.
For those who don't know him, Kenny is a course, vile, culinary genius. He definitely could give a shit what people think.
He once refused to serve Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford, because, as regulars know, "booths are for 2 or more."
