Superfine Super-Successful in Booming Dumbo
Superfine's been in Dumbo for 14 years, which makes it something of an artifact in the fast-changing nabe. But don't think that the bar is anti-gentrification--the money's just too good, according to bartender Keith Moss. "It's a little scary," he says. "Superfine's going with the flow, of course. I mean, it's great for everybody, everybody's making more money." But success has its price, right? Yup. Back to Keith:
But at the same time, it's been sad to see DUMBO losing its bohemian style. It's still here, but you can see that it's starting to get lost in the shuffle. I've been making more martinis and cosmos. We have a lot of people hanging out in suits sitting in our bar. That was never our thing.

Um. I think the article says that the girls have been in DUMBO for 14 years. The restaurant has only been open for about 7 - first in a hole in the wall adjacent to the old neighborhood dive bar Between the Bridges, which has since been torn down to make way for Boymelgreen's lego eyesore the Beacon at 85 Adams. It has been in its current location (next to the rising JCondo monstrosity) for maybe 4 or 5 years.

Between the Bridges was great. Attracted a mix of eccentric boozers from the projects who knew how to get down. I don't know if they are welcome at the newer establishments.

Between the Bridges was always a favorite. fun things always on hand including impromptu lip sinking by local flavors.

has Keith been there the whole time?
I am bored with the people who are sad to see the old Dumbo slipping away and then, when you ask how long they've been there, say since 2002. Sure that's not the case with Keith, but I'm just sayin'

Back in '96 I worked on a film that shot a few scenes at Between the Bridges. I remember everyday at lunchtime, the guys working on the Manhattan Bridge (painting? maintentance?) would come in for a few drinks before returning to work. Not the safest work environment in which to have an afternoon buzz, but it seemed to work for them.

There are also losts of people wearing square glasses in Dumbo now.
