Historic Beauty Makes It All the More Painful

church
house spacePart of what makes the new developments around Tompkins Park so sad is the existence of many beautiful older buildings like the First Corinthian Baptist Church at 670 Lafayette and the gutted five-story brownstone next door at 672 Lafayette.

When I lived in Bed Stuy, I used to take the Lafayette Ave bus to Thompkins Ave and transfer there. I used to pass that church everyday and always wondered about its past. Obviously it was at one time a fabulous mansion, and I love the Flemish/Dutch styling. I'm sure most, if not all of its original detail inside is long gone in order to accommodate a church sanctuary. Perhaps it was a beermeister's home, or a merchant who made good. That was a pretty upper middle class area 100 years ago, and Thompkins Park has beautiful old oak trees that have probably been there for ages. I hope someone here does have info on the house, I'd love to know too.

I don't think the brownstone is gutted, and it has been for sale for some time. When I called for info this summer, the woman on the phone said it was $1mil and needed work (and a stoop). I thought that seemed a wee bit high, although with its park view it could be great.

A million dollars?? Have people been smoking the product sold in the park? A boarded up house with no stoop, and probably no windows, and if it's anything like other boarded up houses I've been in, there is no plumbing either. I think a house there has possibilites, in the future, especially, and if it was even half that, I'd say grab it. But as is, now??? The seller has been given some absurd advice.
