Fire Devastates Brownstone on Second Place

We're still getting caught up from being off the grid for almost two weeks. We checked in with 423smith.com to see what's been happening in Carroll Gardens and were sad to learn of a pretty severe fire that gutted an entire brownstone on Second Place off Clinton. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

The house was beautiful -- a 25-footer and owner (who had lived there 72 years) kept it looking great -- she had just re-pointed this past year. We are all devastated for her sake but glad no one was hurt. (I have seen dozens of neighbors hugging her and expressing their sympathy).

My sympathies go out to all that lost marble and plaster detailing...did any of it make it out alive?

There was a fire last night on 6th ave between 10th and 11th. As guess not as historically significant to report on?

Fires of this magnitude are rare in Carroll Gardens. I've lived in CG for 50 years.

To Anon at 11:19,
There are probably dozens of fires a day in this city. This being a blog about brownstones means that a fire in a brownstone is worth posting about. A fire in an apartment building or a factory might not be. Frankly I think Mr. B does a good job deciding what gets posted here and what does not.

Anon at 2:22 - have you ever been in Park Slope? Even DelMonico's factory has been torn down (a shame, really - and it was in SOUTH South Slope). 6th ave is almost completely residential - and that's a totally brick block.
Your point about 'dozens of fires' is well taken - actually there were over 2500 'structural' fires in Nov '05 alone.

A different fire, but interesting read nonetheless...could this become more common?

3:07 - Wow! Over 80 fires a day in November. I had no idea there were that many. Hats off to the NYFP. I live in Park Slope, so I don't know what you are getting at with your question or your points about DelMonico's and 6th Avenue. My point was only that a lot of bad things happen every day to people's homes, but it is not Brownstoner's job or obligation to report on it.
Cheers
