O Bagel, Where Art Thou?

bagel store
The last couple of weekends we've found ourselves driving over to Williamsburg to buy bagels. We like this bagel store on Bedford Avenue just fine but would love to find a place a little closer to Clinton Hill. Can someone point us in the right direction?

Comments

bergen bagels on myrtle and hall is pretty good. i do believe they make them on site.

I second the recommendation for Bergen Bagels. very good bagels and they deliver. Delivery comes in handy on sleepy weekend mornings also great for brunches and school functions.

I second Bergen Bagel. In fact, you'll find me there several times per week. They've also catered several parties for me (big trays of lox, salads, etc). They recently put in a toss-your-own-salad area (actually they toss it, but you get to pick the ingredients). And my sister swears that they have the best tofu spread she's ever had.

Yes, I think in our area Bergen Bagels is the best that I know of. There is always a line.

Posted by: Anonymous at November 16, 2005 11:19 AM

The bagels are usually still warm from the oven at Bergen Bagels. I love the pumpernickel with tofu veggie cream cheese.

If you like chains, there's Conneticut Muffins down the street from Bergen Bagel on Myrtle and Clinton.

Posted by: Anonymous at November 16, 2005 11:24 AM

but Conneticut Muffins buy their bagels = not tasty. Bergen trumps any day as long as you can handle the line.

Posted by: Anonymous at November 16, 2005 11:30 AM

how about using the phone book or internet, instead of your readers?

Posted by: Anonymous at November 16, 2005 11:40 AM

Because a phone book won't tell you anything qualitative--something readers are pretty good at. What a grump!

Posted by: Brownstoner at November 16, 2005 11:49 AM

The bagel store on Hanson just before you hit target is actually pretty good as well.

Shut up Anon 11:40. You sound like a loser.

There is going to be a Bagel Delight opening on South Portland and Layfayette sometime soon. Im not sure about the quality of their bagels firsthand, but I know people who love them.

Bergen Bagels - unparalleled

I, um, hold on, let's see - sixth? seventh? Bergen Bagels on Myrtle. Mmmm. Time for lunch! Delivery is key for the southern reaches of CH. If you're strolling into Pros Heights to look at all the new development, there is also one on or around Bergen and 6th Ave. Right there where Flatbush, Bergen & 6th Ave converge. I'm guessing that's the original?

Posted by: Mr. Minerva at November 16, 2005 12:24 PM

Yes, I guess I am a grumpy loser. I'll try harder to find someone else's quest for a bagel entertaining and informative.

Posted by: Anonymous at November 16, 2005 12:44 PM

McTeague is also correct. The place near target, Bony's, I think is decent as well.

Posted by: Anonymous at November 16, 2005 12:52 PM

Bergen Bagels awfully good stuff

Posted by: GLF at November 16, 2005 12:56 PM

I've been waiting for this kind of neighborhood info! Thanks everyone. Is there anything remotely resembling a health food store in Ft. Greene/Clinton Hill? Just moved here...

Posted by: Anonymous at November 16, 2005 1:32 PM

Health food store - Karrot. There are 2 locations - one on Myrtle near Clinton and one on Grand just south of Lafayette.

I know everyone said it already, but Bergen is damn tasty. Can't believe you haven't found it yet! Be prepared for long lines on wknds.

Posted by: lesterhead at November 16, 2005 1:43 PM

grumpy loser should take his own advice about being entertaining and informative - does he think the rest of us enjoy reading posts like that?

never been to bergen bagel, but the P-Slope Bagel Delights are great. Very nice people working there too.

Posted by: petunia at November 16, 2005 1:48 PM

If you like big, spongy bagels the size of a queen-size pillow, La Bagel Delight is for you. To me, they're just a slightly improved version of a bagel from the Midwest. I think a bagel should be more dense and firm.

Bergen Bagel's the best!!! Hello!?
The new bagel place on Fulton near Not Ray's is just plain weird. The two time i've been in there they didn't have any bagels. The service is terrible if maybe non-existant. And the flourescent orange decor is just not working for me. I'm not one for health food but "rice" postures itself as a health food eatery. It just opened so the jury is still out.

Posted by: halacious at November 16, 2005 2:06 PM

Bergen Bagels. the one just off Flatbush by the 2/3 subway station. mmmmmm. well liked by some tv crews i know. and they do know food well.

Posted by: DaveW at November 16, 2005 2:13 PM

If you want to get as close to Bagel Store as you can, Bagel World on Court by about Bergen Street is the former partner of the guy who started Bagel Store. Either the one guy broke off to start Bagel Store, or they launched it together, then split up.

Anyway, they're actually really nice and efficient at Bagel World, by contrast. And the bagels are ridiculously good.

Wow, that's a lot of comments for bagels! How about where to go in FG/CH for a casual after-work beer?

Posted by: Lisa at November 16, 2005 2:58 PM

For beers Rope on Myrtle near Clinton ave. is cool although some days seem better than others and I haven't been often enough to determine which. There is also a bar/lounge on Taafe, Sputnik? I think. I've only been once but it looked like it had potential.

Posted by: Anonymous at November 16, 2005 3:09 PM

Bergen Bagels is as good as any I've had anywhere in NYC, really. Glad to hear RICE finally opened; I used to love it when I lived in the LES. As far as a casual after work beer, I like Moe's on Lafayette and Rope at 415 Myrtle, just off the park. The bar at Luz is nice, too.
Does anyone know of any other restaurants set to open in Clinton Hill? I see there's something restaurant-ish set to open on the corner of Greene and Cambridge. Anyone know what's up?
Man, I gotta learn to cook.

halacious, you said "The new bagel place on Fulton near Not Ray's is just plain weird. The two time i've been in there they didn't have any bagels. The service is terrible if maybe non-existant. i think this boo's bagels is a front for something. it's never open and i hear the bagels are crap and they once didn't even have cream cheese.

Posted by: ltjbukem at November 16, 2005 3:45 PM

MJ,

Is the Bagel Delight supposed to be going into 73 Lafayatte btw S. Elliot and S. Portland? I heard this as a rumor in June, but nothing since then. Assumed it had fallen through.

Posted by: Anonymous at November 16, 2005 5:03 PM

Since it's been asked, but getting pretty far from bagels!

Health Food: Karrots on Grand and on Myrtle. They try real hard, but are only so-so. Make sure you check the date on anything you get, from milk to chips.

Afterwork beer: Grand 252 at (get this) 252 Grand Ave (just south of Lafayette).

La Bagel Delight (AKA Bagel Delight) is actually opening 2 new locations... Fort Greene and DUMBO. The latter within a week, and the first by Christmas. There simply aren't any better bagels around... hand rolled, baked on premises constantly, and the place is CLEAN!

Posted by: Ken at November 17, 2005 7:11 PM

There's a bagel shop just ready to open on Fulton, I think between South Portland and South Oxford, but maybe one block further down, can't remember.

Posted by: Sarah at November 18, 2005 6:11 PM

Bergen Bagels on Myrtle
(718) 789-9300
486 Myrtle Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11205

These bagels beat those williamsburg bagels by a knock out....also bagelsmiths up a couple of blocks on Bedford is better ...Wholewheat everything rocks.
