What Are Portland and Dekalb Doing Here?

building building
This pair of buildings at 260-262 St. James Place recently caught our eye. Bearing the same names as nearby streets, these beautiful facades must have some interesting history behind them. Anyone got any ideas? GMAP

I bet the original doors were awesome. It's always so sad to see those plate-glass, brown metal jobs...

I don't have any history on the buildings, though I've admired their facades. The Avenues in Ft. Greene and Clinton Hill are often named after Revolutionary War Generals - Washington, DeKalb, Greene, Putnam. Maybe it is just more of the same but with a building?
