What's Up with 327 President Street?

vermiculation
"Anyone know what's up with the brownstone at 327 President Street, between Smith and Hoyt?" A reader writes in to ask. "It's been abandoned since I moved in down the street about a year ago, and by the looks of the building, much longer. It's smack in the middle of some of Brooklyn's finest brownstones on a block where all the houses have extended front yards. Just seems a shame." GMAP

This house has been boarded up for probably twenty years. Supposedly feuding families. Terrible shame/waste. Beautiful block.

There are a number of building like that in the hood. On 3rd street next to Carvel is one like that...it's been boarded up for decades.

There is one on Pierrepont Circle too. Apparantly its been abandoned for 25+ years and some crazy old man (I heard a psychiatrist) owns it.

#17 3rd st between smith/hoyt no one lives there, its maintained but feuding siblings have kept it off market, lucky for them:>)

Where is Pierrepont Circle?
Union Street has couple more - the seemingly strange guy in house next block down close to Bond - with ladder in front of what looks almost abondoned but he has lived like that for decades.
And 1 block up is that mess next to grocery on corner of Union/Smith - for many years also.
I lived on Clinton St. between Baltic/Warren late 70's to 1986. House on that block not touched in all years I was there and still not touched - though not boarded up.

That curving street near Pierrepont Street proper, by the promenade... I thought it was called Pierrepont Circle but I could be wrong.

anyone know anything about the boarded up 4 story on Berkeley Place between 6th and 7th? Its been in that condition for more than 8 years.

Posted by: Anonymous at July 15, 2005 2:22 PM

It has been boarded up for about 10 years. A friendly little old man used to live there with his cats. Then one winter he apparently died. I have several friends who live on that block and as I understand the rear facade is crumbling. Here is what I heard: For several years they couldn't locate the next of kin, their was family fighting and the last I heard was that some long lost relatives in Eastern Europe have laid claim to the house. Someone is doing something because after the little old man died (probably the winter of 95/96) the weeds grew as high as the parlor window and the windows were open/broken for at least a year until someone finally boarded it up. I kinda miss that little old man. He told some great stories.

There's also a hulk on 6th avenue...I think it's between 9th and 12th sts. Wazzup with that one?

To the poster who wrote about the "friendly little old man": is that in reference to the the house on President or the one on Berkeley?

How about the house on Garfield between 6th & 7th Aves? The facade has actually been stripped (a crying shame) and there seems to be permanent scaffolding.

the hulk on 6th ave around 12th street is finally being renovated. There are actually 2 of these, both on the southwest corner and only 1 or 2 blocks from each other. Bothe started being renovated at the same time but I'm pretty sure by different people.

The one closer to 12th looks like they might do an interesting fusion between turn of the century brownstone and modern design. I'm excited to see the finished product. If anyone has renderings I'd love to see them.

Friendly little old man is in reference to President St. By the way, that house has not hurt the property values on the block at all.

What about the corner building across from two boots on 7th avenue? That place has been empty maybe 2o years. You know the place...with the bar on the ground floor. We used to go drinking there all the time. They would have live music and the woman who tended bar would hand out toy instruments, pots and pans, funny hats, sticks, whatever, and then you would bang the shit out of the stuff to the music. I remember taking friends visiting from Europe there, getting totally ripped and harassing the guy playing "Knights in White Satin" on his acoustic guitar. It's been at least ten years ago and they still talk about that place. I think the bar tender might have owned the building. That place has got to be worth 5 million before renovations.

I live on Second St. for about six months now and wonder about the apt. bildg at 2nd/7th as well. When was it abandoned? It a shame that its abandoned and somebody PLEASE open that bar back up. A brother needs a drink and Two Boots has too many kids.

That corner building could be made into 12 great condos, with the developer keeping the commercial condos for himself. Plus its right across from PS 321 I wonder if they kept up the liquor license on the bar. Man that thing would be worth $4o grand alone. You could serve afternoon cocktails to the nannies waiting to pick up the kids. 2for1's

Another empty brownstone that brings tears to my eyes –also the subject of a family feud– sits on the southwest corner of First Place and Clinton in CG. The exterior of building is in *pristine* condition...but it has NO GUTS! It's all 2 x 4s and insulation and has been so for at least the last few years. They have a groundskeeper, so it's at least well-maintained, but to leave such a grand house on one of Brooklyn's most beautiful blocks empty for so long (not to mention pay taxes!) –so sad.

I served on jury duty, a civil case, in which the brother and sister were fighting over the family home in bayridge since the 70's.
Shortly before the father died his daughter who was estranged from the rest of the family, got the father to change the will giving her everything. This after the son had been looking after the sick parent for years. We heard the case but the lawyers decided to settle. I don't know who got it. After 25 years the kids were ready for nursing homes anyway.
