Brooklyn Celebrity Real Estate Roundup

celebsWe know some of you can't stand it when we go into star-fucking mode, so we'll apologize in advance. Sorry. Now to the two snippets of Brooklyn celebrity real estate. Adrian Grenier (top), the HBO star who's buying a place not far from us in Clinton Hill, gives us a glimpse of his renovation plans in this week's NY Magazine and it ain't pretty:

I just bought a place in Clinton Hill...My summer plan is to fix up my house. I have a bed already. I’d buy some Föm pillows ($75 at Brookstone) and an above-ground pool for the backyard ($140 at Sports Authority). The rest of the furniture, I’ll find on the street.

There goes the neighborhood. And in more tenuous news, the NY Observer is reporting that actress Rachel Wiesz (bottom) and director fiance Darren Aronofsky may be ditching their recently acquired $3.5 million East Village townhouse for a place in Brooklyn.

I think I saw that guy walking two little dogs on St. James this morning. What show is he on?

HBO's Entourage

Why would a celeb advertise where they live? Aren't there enough nuts out there? Like us, commenting on their housing choices, I suppose.
On a related note, saw Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams touring Red Hook by bike this past weekend.

let's form a welcoming committee so that all these folk know how much we love it that they now live near us, proving what a cool choice we made when we chose to live where we live.
let's get a life people.

I lost out in a bidding war with Grenier's mother, the Corcoran agent acting for him in the purchase of his Cl.H. house. Place needs way more than $9000K. Serious structural issues on the front of the house. An above ground pool in the back would indeed be a shame in the tiny back yard.

no it would be proving what a cool choice they made to live in MY neighborhood

Word. Plus Wiesz is a cutie.

This is all such old news; like when, in the past 100 years, have there not been celebrities--REAL celebrities, like notable authors, artists and composers--living in Brownstone Brooklyn?
As for Adrian Grenier's purchase in Clinton Hill; this is such very old news. He clased on the house last fall and actually started work on it shortly thereafter. If he's stopped, perhaps it is lack of $$'s? Clinton Hillbilly is absolutely right: even though other bidders bid more than Grenier, because his mother is a Corcoran broker (Manhattan) and it was a Corcoran listing (Jerry Minsky), a lot of funny business went on there and AG/his mother finally got it. It's a beautiful frame house by the way (wide, with a side yard, parking, back yard and impressive "southern" front porch) but--Clinton HillBilly right again--in total disrepair outside and in. And did we mention that a Satanic cult--with their own culture of rats-- lives next door? And how about that crack house across the street?
Grenier's comments are ludicrous--and stupid--much like the character--a young "starlet" actor who livs in L.A. far above his means with four of his old high school buddies; frat house style-- he plays on Entourage.

Yeah, it's kind of depressing to imagine Turtle and Johnny Drama macking on groupies in the... above-ground pool.

Sorry, I just posted the comment about the Adrian Greneir house (below) and, having misread the other attributions, thought it was Clinton Hillbilly who was the losing bidder. I'm assuming, though, that Clinton Hillbilly does live in Clinton Hill and I hope that he, and all others in this gorgeous and wonderful neighborhood/community will be kind and forgiving to any or all nouveau smart asses and "celebrities" who have recently "discovered" the neighborhood..

The fact that we -- brooklynites -- continue to defend our star power is gettin' me down. This guy is thisclose to a nobody and you know it. Yes, it's true, Paul Auster and company live in Brooklyn. Don't forget to trot out the fact that Jennifer Connelly and Health Ledger (whoever he is!) live here too. We heart Stanley Tucci!

But people, once you can actually name the "celebs" in your burrough, you are kinda disproving your point. And acting lame, in general. AND WE ARE NOT LAME!

I'm the one who was outbid. Don't necessarily think funny business went on, just outbid our verbally accepted offer at the 11th hour. We were definitely disappointed but all's well that ends well though as we bought a better place that is a brownstone in the 2fam config we wanted originally wanted (garden floor apt with owners triplex) in Clinton Hill. I think the article was not supposed to be terribly serious in terms of what Grenier is going to do with the house. Who knows. I like it that minor and major celebrities are buying into the hood, just further evidence of its popularity that should improve services in the area.

Posted by: Anonymous at July 21, 2005 3:44 PM

and by the way, across the street is not a crackhouse

Posted by: Anonymous at July 21, 2005 3:47 PM

The homeless crew that we dislodged from our stoop a few months ago seems to have settled in quite comfortably to Grenier's front porch in his absence. Bet they'll be in favor of the pool, too!

Posted by: Brownstoner at July 21, 2005 4:06 PM

I'm a she -- and yes I do live in Clinton Hill, although brownstoner keeps trying to claim that my block is actually bed stuy = (

love bed-stuy, but I'd hate to change my moniker...

PS we do have actual celebs like Jeffrey Wright and Rosie Perez keepin' it real in FG

and once my daughter was playing with John Turturro's son in the tot lot in Prospect Park, I don't care what anybody says it was great to talk to him, he's an amazing actor and really f-ing cool. so there.

Posted by: clinton hillbilly at July 21, 2005 4:11 PM

Hey, did you know that Poohbahs have been marked down at Toys-R-Us! I just picked up an orange Zing Zing Zingbah for $5.99 down from $19.99. And he wasn't even on the shelf, he was just thrown into a big pile. Hollywood celebrities have such a fragile existance. Maybe the inflatable above ground pool IS a good idea, for now anyway.

Celebrities come from Brooklyn too, they don't just move here and confer hipness on the borough. Jennifer Connelly, for example, graduated from St. Ann's in the early 80s; I'm pretty sure she grew up in Brooklyn Heights.

Posted by: Sloper at July 21, 2005 4:42 PM

It's the same 10 stories all the time! Jennifer Connelly went to St Anns! We know! How could you forget about John Turturro? He was in that good movie ten years ago!

I'm sure many Brooklyn folks spent some years in Manhattan where it was likely that actual famous people lived on your block. Perhaps several. I agree that giving a shout out to John Turturro does make us look a little feeble.

Posted by: Anonymous at July 21, 2005 6:03 PM

I am soooooo with you here.

Posted by: Anonymous at July 21, 2005 6:42 PM

Uh, I'm not really sure what the debate here is. I don't care what celebrities live in Brooklyn, and yes, I have lived in Manhattan as well (right next door to Kate Hudson and down the block from Ric Ocasek, and able to look into Julia Roberys apt... kinda creepy).

My point was only that I find the articles about celebs "discovering" Brooklyn somewhat offensive, and silly. There have always been famous people who move here (Norman Mailer in the 50s) and there are also normal Brooklyn kids who grow up to be famous (the Jennifer Connally example).

Posted by: Sloper at July 21, 2005 7:33 PM

Agreed, Sloper... it is offensive. And silly.

Posted by: archer at July 21, 2005 7:43 PM

Offensive? Sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder. There is no "debate" here, just gossip.

Posted by: Anonymous at July 21, 2005 9:58 PM

Julia Roberts today and Norman Mailer 50 years ago are examples that defend the lame posters position.

The three stooges came from brooklyn....case closed.
