We Like to Eat!

Food. Glorious Food. Quite simply, the Flea's gonna have more of it, starting now. If we become a stop on your weekend food rounds--for a nosh or for your Sunday-dinner ingredients--well, that makes us happy.

For starters, our pal Ricardo has been toiling away to get ready for the debut of his new Pillar Cuban food stall this weekend (named for Hemingway's boat when he lived in Havana), which will feature both smoked ham and cod croquettes, pressed Cuban sandwiches, a Galician white bean soup, and these amazing chicken or smoked short rib empanadas made with yucca and corn dough. He'll also have a guava and cream cheese pie for dessert. Delicioso! Pillar will be Choice's new neighbor. (Ricardo is also a Soros Open Society Institute Justice Fellow, chat him up!)

Whimsy%20cookie.jpgLongtime NYC pastry chef Mark Sopchak and his art director wife Jenna Park recently launched Whimsy & Spice, a line of cookies, brownies, and homemade marshmallows (yum!) that each feature a unique/unexpected flavor--honey lavender shortbread or cinnamon chocolate malt biscotti, for example. They'll have awesome Mother's Day gift boxes (right) this week. E12 near the middle aisle, this week and next.

As hinted last week, the organic ice cream dream team of Blue Marble and ze Flea becomes a reality May 11, when these fine gals (and neighbors of Senor) transport the frozen love from their Atlantic Ave. shop to the Flea's food emporium. Bless their hearts.

Hot%20Bread%20Kitchen.jpgLater this month, Hot Bread Kitchen makes a bid to be your local remote bakery (how '08!), when they start purveying fresh baked breads of the world. Lavash, multi-grain loaves, hand-ground tortillas? Yeah, that's what we're talkin' about. (Hopefully they'll bust out their corn-grinding cycle soon too.) Oh, did we mention their focaccia of the week, featuring a city-garden-grown topping, or how they use recipes from immigrant women? Uh huh. Location TBD.

Quick note: Kumquat Cupcakery and Brown Bag Industries are both off this week.

And finally, thanks to Brooklyn Paper for pimping our nibbles this week.

Check out offManhattan.com's review of the Brooklyn Flea Market. The Flea is a great way to spend a Sunday in New York. Thanks Brownstoner! :)

I would desperately love to see Brownstone Beans coffee at the flea. They are a local black-owned coffee company. The owner Harold imports the beans and roasts them himself in Bushwick. His coffee is served at numerous restaurants in the area and Manhattan. He also wholesales to several Manhattan gourmet markets. The coffee is to-die-for!!!!

Sounds like the Flea is becoming an open air Starbucks.

This type of vendor is bad for the hood since people won't go go to the local food spots, but instead, will pay extra for food at the flea just for the 'convenience' of not having to walk across the street.

you are an idiot, 4:34.

there is nothing across the street.

you've never been to brooklyn, have you?

First of all, if you look through the various comments made on different posts, the local restaurants have benefitted enormously from the crowds attracted by the Market.

If anything, the Brooklynflea is a boon to local vendors. Furthermore, those people and small, locally owned companies are every bit as valid as those establishments that are open 7 days a week in the neighborhood. That they are only offered once a week at the market in no way undermines their credibility as the type of business that locals would want to support. Most of the food vendors featured at the flea are in fact, Brooklyn based companies--not multibillion dollar company fare like Starbucks.

Anyone who has purchased food at the flea knows that it is both affordable, and delicious. Why do you assume that one has to "pay more" if they're bying at the flea?

But I do hope that you eat across the street. Which means that you will be either eating mulch from the local trees or breaking to an apartment and stealing a sandwich from someone's kitchen. Bon Appetit.

"pimping our nibbles"? Nasty.

Brooklyn Flea takes place every Sunday from 10am to 5pm—rain or shine—at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, on Lafayette Ave. between Clermont and Vanderbilt Ave. The Flea features 200 vendors of vintage furniture, clothing and antiques alongside new designs by local makers of everything from jewelry to textiles. More information about the Flea can be found through the "About" link above. Our list of vendors is below. Please note that some vendors are on a rotating schedule. Also, school rules prevent bringing bikes or dogs into the market area.
