fife%20band.jpgWe're psyched to welcome what's sure to be a lively interlude at this Sunday's Flea, when The Rising Star Fife and Drum Band march through the market making their joyful sound unto the lord. They'll be coming through around 4pm for about 20 minutes if you want to check it out.

They'll also be performing across the street at the Masonic Temple with local Brooklyn gal Toshi Reagon at a 7pm show put on by our pals at boomBOOM Presents. The show is part of 651 Fulton Arts' Mississippi Delta Heritage Project, which rolls on through June 7 in the 'hood.

The Fife and Drum Band is led by 18-year-old Sharde Thomas, whose grandfather Otha Turner was a pioneer of hill country blues and helped spread the mix of marching-band music and West African rhythm beyond the Delta. This is Sharde and the band's first NYC appearance since the 2003 passing of legendary Otha. (Check out this "Ode to Otha" video clip for a sampling.)

Come one come all!

Please, no drum and fife corp. It's bad enough that you started this Flea Market without consulting with the neighborhood residents.
The reason we live here is to get away from the constant noise in Manhattan and now you have co-opted our peaceful Sunday afternoons, thanks a lot!

Don't use Eddie Rock's Delivery Service. They don't deliver on time.

i LOVE the flea, but i'm quite glad it's not in my neighborhood.

i'd hate to live within 5-10 blocks of that place...

what a complaining whiner, 4:42. Twenty minutes of drum corp is going to ruin your day? Please find a mountain top in Alaska to live on.

The Fife and Drum Corps was a breath of fresh air! A real tasty frosting to another exciting Sunday at the Flea. We like that you are incorporating lots of elements from the environs into this enterprise. Now, let's talk about port-a-potties......

It's bad enough that you started this Flea Market without consulting with the neighborhood residents.

Forest City Ratner "consulted" the neighborhood residents and look at what it got everyone. The world's worst mall (aka: Atlantic Center) that doesn't have ANY entrances facing the "neighborhood residents" it supposedly caters to.

Are there board meetings to discuss the opening of check cashing services, store-front psychics, car-services and other *cough* fronts?

Some of the flea booths are a bit "twee", but overall it's a positive. A schoolyard being used during non-school days to do something other than gather dust.

What does "twee" mean?

The drum and fife was the best part of the afternoon - local youth artists, why should they have to get your permission 4:42 to play, THEY are the neighborhood.

To the commenter about Eddy Rock, I think you probably have been late a few times in your life. He is a reliable guy and I've dealt with him when I sold at Chelsea. He is much more consistent than the earlier movers the market had and cheaper. His prices are fair and he delivers to Manhattan and the market benefits from having a service. If you can offer a better service, tell Eric. Always follow a complaint with at least one solution, otherwise your just another complainer. Fred from Silver Fox

ABOUT

Brooklyn Flea takes place every Sunday from 10am to 5pm—rain or shine—at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, on Lafayette Ave. between Clermont and Vanderbilt Ave. The Flea features 150 vendors of vintage furniture, clothing, collectibles and antiques, as well as new jewelry, art and crafts by local artisans, plus delicious food. Our list of vendors is below--please note that some vendors are on a rotating schedule. School rules prevent bringing bikes or dogs into the market. The tentative last date for this year is December 21.
