Flea as Yenta
Entering Week 8, the community vibe at ze Flea is being joined by a collegiality among vendors that's spilling over into the business realm.
How cool was it, for example, when two Sundays ago the owner of Matta (far right), the groovy Soho boutique whose Lafayette fence booth is a weekly frenzy of fashionistas, sauntered by Nightwood, Nadia and Myriah's re-purposed wood furniture upstart (right), and bought every piece in their booth to furnish the Matta shop. Answer: muy cool.
Or when, that same Sunday, Sue from LaCrosta Pie Co. up in Johnsonville, NY, happened to be positioned next to our pals from Blue Marble Ice Cream by the bleachers, and then on his way home from ze Flea the following Sunday Senor Flea grabbed a strawberry cone and saw LaCrosta Pies on offer at--it's true--Blue Marble. Coincidence? No way Jose! Twas the subtle power (force?) of the Flea in evidence, a partnership a la mode if you will.
All four vendors will be back this Sunday. Who's gonna be the next match?

It's great to hear that the Flea Market is starting to generate a life of it's own. My boyfriend and I live around the corner and really enjoy strolling through each weekend. But, there are a couple of things about the layout that distract us each time we come. We're both designers, so please forgive the overthinking:
1. It's hard to determine where some of the aisles begin and end. It seems like a simpler plan with fewer, longer aisles would make it easier to navigate and be sure you've seen everything.
2. The bleachers get lost behind the stalls. They seem like a great perch overlooking the activity of the market--a place to rest and stay awhile. But, with the stalls backing up to them, they aren't as appealing a place as they could be.

i agree about the confusing aisle layout.
i've been a bunch of times now and each time i'm lost and feel as though i can't tell if i've seen a certain section or not.
is the idea that we get lost and wander around longer?
if so, it's working, but i don't find it helpful or pleasant...
otherwise, i love the flea!

I would like to let you know that shops on Vanderbilt are DEFINITELY benefiting from the increased foot traffic that comes past us from the Slope, on the way to the Flea...THANKS!

The B69 bus has been PACKED on Sundays...people coming to/from the Slope...
They need to run more frequent buses on Sundays. Twice an hour is not enough. Can you talk to the powers that Be?

We attempted to go to the Flea Market this past Sunday.
We drove rather than taking the train because we thought we might need to car to transport any larger items we might purchase.
We didn't end up purchasing anything because we never found anywhere to park. Every block in every direction seems to have a "No Standing Anytime" sign for blocks and blocks and the one parking lot that is right at the Flea Market wanted $16 to keep the car for an hour, which seems ridiculous to me.

you know where you can find a parking spot real easy and it's only two blocks away? clermont between atlantic and fulton.
