Some good news to report on Atlantic Avenue: A tipster sent word that former neighborhood fixture Near East Pita Bakery, which closed many years ago, will be making a comeback. The eatery will operate in its original basement space at 183 Atlantic and be run by the son of the owner of Oriental Pastries across the street. We stopped by and got a tour of the under-construction space. The sit-down spot will feature Middle Eastern fare, including pita cooked in the impressive brick oven, which you can see after the jump. The opening date has not yet been determined, as more money needs to be secured to finish up construction. Regardless, we’re looking forward to its reemergence on Atlantic. GMAP

  1. This is potentially very good news. It’s nice to see an old favorite return, even if it is in a new modern (and I assume, much more expensive) form. The old bakery sold some of the best meat and spinach pies in the country. I hope they will make them available again for retail sale.
