Red Hook, with its somewhat isolated waterfront location, has managed to keep some of its gritty industrial character amidst lots of change in Brooklyn. An upcoming tour will explore the history that transformed it from a small Dutch village to a 19th century working waterfront, and now to a haven for artists in modern Brooklyn.

The New York Adventure Club will highlight Red Hook’s history and resurgence with a tour past the neighborhood’s old warehouses, now transformed into glassworks, warehouses, a Fairway, and even a combination distillery/chocolate factory. Other tour points will include a trip to an abandoned streetcar to discuss the impact of the proposed BQX, a look at Hurricane Sandy recovery and a peek at Red Hook Community Farm, a symbol of community investment.

At the conclusion of the tour, guide Norman Oder will point participants to other sites worth exploring, such as the Red Hook Food Vendors.

The tour will take place Saturday August 5 from 2 to 4 p.m. Tourgoers are encouraged to bring a water bottle and wear comfortable walking shoes. Tickets are $29 for early bird admission and $35 for general admission. For more information or to purchase tickets, click here.
