Petition Asks for Park Avenue Improvements Next Year

The Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project (MARP) has worked pretty tirelessly to bring streetscape improvements to the stretch of Park Avenue between Navy and Steuben streets underneath the BQE. So it’s good news that the Department of Transportation agreed to take on an official Park Avenue safety improvement project, but the DOT tentatively scheduled these improvements for 2014. The Fort Greene Association brought it to our attention that MARP started a petition to push these changes for next year, while asking DOT to consider short-term improvements in the meantime. According to the Fort Greene Association, these are the improvements DOT will follow up on before a full project is undertaken:
· Initiating a “warrant study” to determine the need for any new traffic
signals along Park Avenue
· Recording speed and volume data on Park Avenue
· Installing countdown pedestrian clocks at all intersections
· Continuing a lighting efficiency study to determine where light levels are
low, and installing additional lighting in any place that does not meet the
minimum requirement
· Looking into adding stop signs and “no parking” pavement markings near
the entrance and exit of each parking area under the BQE
