Closed since 1984, the McCarren Park Pool reopened this morning after a three-year, $50 million renovation. In advance of this morning’s ribbon-cutting with Mayor Bloomberg and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, the Open Space Alliance held its annual gala poolside last night, so we were able to get some photos of the 37,950-square-foot body of water; in addition to the pool, the adjoining year-round recreation center was also completely refurbished. The McCarren Pool was one of 11 built in 1936 by Robert Moses (who drew rare words of praise in a speech by outgoing Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe last night); with McCarren’s opening, all 11 are now back in service. Admission to the pool is free and a membership at the rec center and gym will be just $100 a year. Check out Curbed for its live-blogging of the ceremonies this morning.

  2. Well day 2 brought a huge fight (mini riot) that had them close the pool an hour and a half early. Then they forced everyone out into the street. If you don’t want your kids subjected to some really ugly stuff, don’t bring them. $50 million waste of money, lifeguards can’t combat the fighting. Thanks Mayor Bloomberg. Idiot.
