RIP Monster Island warehouse and garage. A tipster sent in this photo of demolition that has started at 210 Kent Avenue between Metropolitan and North 3rd Street. Construction workers fenced off the area earlier this week, and now the garage that was to the right of the warehouse has come down. The Monster Island art center closed in the fall of 2011 after being in the neighborhood for seven years. The artists covered all the artwork on the building with paint in anticipation of the demolition, which was supposed to happen almost a year ago. You can see pictures of the artwork once on the building here. Since the DOB first approved demolition permits in December 2011, no new building permits have been submitted for this site. This spot was rumored to become a Whole Foods, and then that rumor was debunked. Ultimately Whole Foods announced they’d build at another site on North 4th Street between Bedford Avenue and Berry Street. So what’s in store for the Monster Island site? Be in touch if you’ve got any intel.
