Downtown YogaWorks Sets Spring Opening

YogaWorks has started construction on its 5,800-square-foot space in the Brooklyn Municipal Building at 210 Joralemon Street, and hopes to open in spring of next year, according to a press release. This will be its sixth location in New York City. The new studio will feature two large studios with 13-foot ceilings, a “specially designed lyengar yoga wall,” spa-like locker rooms with showers and towel service, a boutique and a tea bar.
YogaWorks said they will build a studio that reflects the “cultural sensibility of the area, mixing classic architecture, a modern design aesthetic and an emphasis on natural materials.” They also plan to use green building materials like energy efficient LED lighting, FSC certified bamboo flooring and low VOC paint. This location will begin selling memberships on December 1. YogaWorks and Sephora both signed leases at the building earlier this summer, and Sephora plans to open next month.

Now this is interesting; I worked in that building back in the early 1990s. It was a building dedicated solely to municipal government usage. It feels rather odd, to include a yoga studio in a building like that. As far as I know, the municipal government usage persists, ie., I went there over the summer to visit the Department of Buildings and I saw that my old office space had become civil service testing center. I have to wonder whether this is an attempt to move all of those usages out of the building. Hmm.
