The Transit Museum is leading a tour of the hulking and mysterious MTA substation on Nostrand Avenue just south of Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights, offering a glimpse into subway infrastructure that’s rarely open to the public. The building, constructed to power the extension of the IRT line into Brooklyn, houses a combination of old and new machinery dating back to the turn of the century. It also sits over “crypt-like caverns” that were dug when it was first built. The tours are Sunday, February 23 and March 23 at 1 pm, and tickets can be purchased on the Transit Museum’s website. It costs $35 for museum members and $45 for non members.
