Election year spectacles involving wacky signs and costumes are not a new phenomenon. In July of 1912, a photographer for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle captured an election themed tableau on the Coney Island boardwalk. The man on the elephant represents incumbent President William H. Taft, a Republican. The top-hatted figure leading a donkey is his Democratic opponent, Woodrow Wilson.

Apparently Luna Park staged a stunt race between the two animals, announcing that they would run between Coney Island and Washington, D.C. It is unclear if the animals completed the race, but the Presidential race was won by Woodrow Wilson.
