This October, you can experience the scenic Brooklyn waterfront and get your daily steps in at the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative’s half marathon and 5k event.

In a route that journeys along the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway from Red Hook to Greenpoint and back, participants in the half marathon (13.2 miles) may be distracted by skyline views and a dash through the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The 5k run and walk (3.1 miles) is equally scenic, with a route through Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The Brooklyn Greenway Half & 5K attracts runners from Brooklyn and beyond. The sold-out 2016 event saw 1,650 finishers from Brooklyn and 30 states across the country. Participants this year will be able to end the race with an awards ceremony and refreshments at the start and finish point of the race on Columbia Street between Kane and Degraw streets.

The event is producted by EliteFeates and hosted every year by the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative, a nonprofit organization that advocates for the completion of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. The pedestrian and cycling path will eventually stretch 14 miles from Greenpoint to Bay Ridge — six miles of the Greenway have been completed, leaving eight to go.
