As spring approaches and the first flowers and plants begin to bloom, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is kicking off the season with an event focused on the value of water in our lives.

The 36th annual iteration of the Making Brooklyn Bloom conference will celebrate the opening of the new Shelby White and Leon Levy Water Garden. The garden, which opened in September, was built as part of the Botanic Garden’s ongoing Campaign for the Next Century. It features a 1.5-acre wetland and habitats for wildlife, including many birds who frequent the garden.

The theme of the conference revolves around water. The day will kick off with a keynote address by author and environmental activist Courtney White. Talks and workshops include a primer on local waterways, the science of aquaponics, and a tour of the new water garden.

Making Brooklyn Bloom is the Botanic Garden’s annual kickoff event to the spring season. Every year has a different theme, usually centering on a type of sustainable gardening or horticulture in Brooklyn.
