An Open House pick in May, this lavishly detailed Romanesque Revival house at 1142 Dean Street in Crown Heights sold for $930,000 on July 27. The ask was $985,000. Brownstoner’s own Montrose Morris said the house has twice been on the Crown Heights North Association house tour, and that it was designed by architect George P. Chappell and built in 1889. In 1939, it became home to the Matthewson family, who were the first African-American family to live on that block. For the last ten years or so, it has been used as a bed and breakfast and a yoga studio.

Because the house has a center stair, it would be difficult to divide into apartments, although a ground-floor apartment and a triplex above would work, she said. The main kitchen was removed, and the current owner is only the fourth owner. The house is in the landmarked Crown Heights North District. What do you think of the house and the sale price?
