1st Annual Brooklyn Springtime Guitar Show
Brooklyn Bowl is proud to host the Collect-I-Bowl 1st Annual Brooklyn Springtime Guitar Show. Musicians, collectors, enthusiasts and fans alike are encouraged to drop in and check out a vast assortment of other collectors’ equipment. Everything from guitars, strings, picks, amps and straps to books and albums will be displayed. Vendors will also be on hand selling new, used and vintage products. The show is a buy, sell and trade event so attendees are also encouraged to bring their own equipment to show off. With Lisa Sharken hosting and DJ Uncle Mike spinning all day, it is sure to be a fun-filled day for all of those who attend. Sunday, April 3. 12 p.m. Free. 61 Wythe Avenue, Brooklyn Bowl.
Poetry Reading: Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Black Girl
Join in on an evening of poetry with E.J. Antonio, Rachel Eliza Griffiths, Robin Coste Lewis, Kamilah Aisha Moon and Aracelis Girmay. In celebration of National Poetry Month, BHS partners with A.I.R. Gallery and Cave Canem to present an evening of poetry. The collaboration marks the beginning of an ongoing series of poetry readings. All are welcome to attend. The Brooklyn Flea
The Flea moves outdoor this weekend. On Saturday, the Flea is held at 176 Lafayette Ave. (between Clermont + Vanderbilt Avenues) in Fort Greene. On Sunday, the Flea will be at 27 North 6th Street (between Kent Avenue + East River). The Flea features over a 150 vendors offering a great mix of vintage, antiques, jewelry, and amazing food. Saturday & Sunday, April 2 & 3. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Free.

Book Talk: The Great Divorce
What happened to the three Chapman children when they disappeared from a New York Shaker village in 1815? Had they been “taken captive” by the Shakers, as their mother alleged–or was their unstable father responsible, as the Shakers claimed? llyon Woo will discuss the central mystery and sensational custody and divorce at the heart of The Great Divorce, as well as this frequently asked question: What became of the children? The answer involves adultery, bigamy, attempted murder, and other tabloid drama, staged in Brooklyn– a shocking turn of events for former Shakers. Panel: Re-Examining Carl Furillo
Ted Reed, a veteran reporter and author of the new book Carl Furillo: Brooklyn Dodgers All-Star, will speak about Furillo’s career and two little-explored events that have shaped perceptions of the Dodgers right-fielder: Furillo’s supposed opposition to Jackie Robinson joining the Dodgers and Furillo’s suit against the Dodgers for injuries. Judith Testa, a former college professor and author of Sal Maglie: Baseball’s Demon Barber, will speak about the twists and turns in the relationship between Furillo and Maglie. Who Mash-Up Reggae
The Coalition to Preserve Reggae Music (CPR) will launch the 2011 Community conversation Series with a forum titled Who Mash-Up Reggae: Reining in the Almshouse Artists. The forum will take a look the role of performers in denigrating the message and the ethos of the genre. Join in on a conversation about the role of professional conduct and personal practices of artists, their teams and how industry officials play in shaping the direction and perception of the art form. How to Fix Your Home and Save on Energy Bills
Sustainable Flatbush will be hosting the second in a series of informational events to promote the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). This federally-funded program provides home improvements that reduce energy bills by an average of 32%, while at the same time improving health, safety and comfort, all at NO COST to income-eligible homeowners and tenants. Although the Weatherization Assistance Program has existed for over 30 years, it is not well-known or understood. Opera: Henry’s Wife and Eichmann in Jerusalem
Henry’s Wife will be performed in a pairing with Eichmann in Jerusalem, a new opera that details the trial and demise of Nazi officer Adolf Eichmann, the infamous “architect of the Holocaust.” Eichmann, the fifth installment in an operatic monodrama series: new works developed and/or commissioned and presented by AOP, will feature baritone Ross Benoliel (New York City Opera, Glimmerglass Opera), with Jody Schum music directing and string quartet accompaniment.
