Boerum Hill Brooklyn House for Sale -- 243 Dean Street

Eyeball the front parlor of 243 Dean Street, with its marble mantle, wide-plank floors and foliate crown molding, and it looks like a standard-issue Boerum Hill townhouse, albeit quite a nice one. Move farther into the home, though, and it’s a dramatically different story.

The house has been given a high-end architectural renovation that’s anything but standard-issue, marked by walls of glass and fabricated steel, exposed wooden beams, painted brick and loft-like open spaces. It makes for a beguiling mix of the traditional — note the original curved staircase winding past the glass walls — and the modern.

It also makes for an awfully nice house. A lot of care — not to mention cash dollars — appears to have gone into the renovation, which incorporated details like reglazed historic sinks and burnished concrete floors in the bathrooms, high-end appliances and custom maple cabinetry in the kitchen, cedar-lined closets, stripped and powder-coated radiators and a Shaker wood-burning stove tucked inside an original marble mantle on the top floor.

One of the house’s more remarkable features is a parlor floor that appears to retain all its original details, yet has been opened up into one grand room. (Presumably the owners spent some dough re-creating the foliate crown molding where the rooms were originally divided.)

The house is also very wide — 21 feet. It’s four stories, plus there is a finished cellar. The top floor is a master suite, which has only a modest-sized bedroom but boasts a stunning open living space with a massive peaked skylight.

Two glass-walled bedrooms take up the third floor; the garden floor is entirely open, save a small powder room, with a glass wall looking out onto the bluestone patio in the rear.

Plumbing, electric and mechanical systems are new.

The house was last on our radar in 2008, when it was featured as an open house pick, and subsequently sold for $2.44 million, to buyers who presumably did the renovations. Listed by Richard Ziegelasch and Lee Solomon of Brown Harris Stevens, it’s currently asking $4.995 million.

A steep price, but it’s a one-of-a-kind house. What do you think of what they’ve done with it?

  1. I agree with previous posters that there are some things that don’t support the price. It feels as though someone really wanted loft living. Lots of walls were removed and then some contemporary insertions created rooms. This approach was more successful in SOHO where the ceiling heights are high and the wood and cast iron structural members have a robust scale. Disappointing to me was the kitchen – $5 million for blah wood cabinets.

  2. Um… It absolutely beautiful but looking at the floor plans there literally seems to be only ONE closet? It must be a mistake? That closet isn’t even on the master bedroom floor? So if you’ve got kids you’re sharing one closet with them and god knows where you hang a coat. Won’t be a fun project to figure out how and where to incorporate some storage into a glass house. Just sayin’ if I had 5 million dollars I’d want some closets to put my junk in.
