The tides of New York City’s ever-shifting demographics have changed particularly rapidly in Brooklyn’s residential enclave of Bensonhurst.

Once known as Kings County’s Little Italy for its large Italian-American population, according to census data between 2000 and 2010 the area has seen a 57 percent increase in its Chinese population. This makes the neighborhood one of New York’s fastest-growing Chinese populations.

Now, City Limits Executive Editor Jarrett Murphy, President of the Brooklyn Chinese-American Association Paul Mak, Professor of Urban Affairs and Planning at Hunter College Peter Kwong, and Councilmember and Bensonhurst representative Mark Treyger will consider what Bensonhurst’s Asian influx means in regards to the city’s political landscape.

To be hosted by the Brooklyn Historical Society, the discussion, titled The Asian Communities in Bensonhurst, will take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 27 at the society’s 128 Pierrepont Street location. Tickets cost $5 and are available for purchase online; free for members.
