According to the July 1916 issue of “Our Navy, the Standard Publication of the U.S. Navy,” Wallabout is a corruption of “Waal Boght,” Dutch for Waal Bend, which reflects the large number of Walloons–French-speaking natives of Belgium–who once resided near a bend in the East River.
