Know Your Tenant Rights: B.P. Adams Hosts Free Legal Clinic in East New York

In the face of increasing awareness of displacement and tenant harassment, especially in the black community, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams will be holding a legal clinic on tenant displacement to educate Brooklynites on the laws relevant to their housing.
Adams’s partners for the clinic include State Senators Martin Malavé Dilan and Roxanne Persaud, Assembly Members Charles Barron, Erik Martin Dilan and Latrice Walker, and Council Members Inez Barron and Rafael L. Espinal, Jr., as well as the East New York Business Improvement District (BID).
The event will be held from 6-8 p.m. this evening, December 15, at the offices of Community Board 5 at 127 Pennsylvania Avenue in East New York.
Lawyers from the Legal Aid Society and Brooklyn Legal Services will assist in the two-hour session, giving free legal advice on fearing or being threatened by displacement in the neighborhoods of Brownsville, Cypress Hills and East New York.
The clinic is just one of a series of efforts Adams has made to aid tenants facing landlord harassment, especially in east and central Brooklyn neighborhoods.
“The law is a weapon for Brooklynites battling immoral and even illegal landlord behavior, and it is our responsibility to make that weapon easily wieldable for every at-risk tenant, especially those whose circumstances have typically left them underserved,” Adams said in a press release regarding the clinic. “Tenants have rights, and I am committed to doing whatever possible to ensure those rights are upheld and respected by everyone.”
