German-born street photographer Lutz Dille had a knack for capturing candid moments in dirty back alleys and teeming cities.

Despite a life spent largely in Canada and Europe, Dille also had a few well-documented stints in New York. During these, he was able to capture New York moments in Coney Island and beyond — iconic evocations of time and place which, without his photos, would likely have been forgotten.

Dille passed away in France in 2008, at the age of 86, but his photos remain in permanent collections worldwide, including MoMA and the Museum of the City of New York.
