Midwood Library Celebrates New Plaza, Funded Through Participatory Budgeting

A local library got a makeover thanks to participatory budgeting.

The Brooklyn Public Library’s Midwood Library branch at 975 East 16th Street celebrates the opening of its new plaza with a ribbon cutting today, November 3, at 2 p.m. The branch improvement includes a paved bluestone entrance, greenery, benches, and bike racks, the library said in an email.

The library addition was created through $250,000 in participatory budgeting funds thanks to Council Member David Greenfield. Participatory budgeting is a process in which local residents earmark funds for capital improvement projects. Other projects have included street repairs and a storytelling garden.

Another significant change at the library in recent months: The branch recently added Sunday hours to better serve the area’s Orthodox Jewish population.
