Bedford Stuyvesant House for Sale -- 629 Putnam Avenue

If brownstones with original fireplace mantels set your pulse pounding, then this one at 629 Putnam Avenue in Bed Stuy demands a look — it’s got seven of them. The four shown are particularly fancy examples of Queen Anne style, with elaborate wood work and Minton-style tiles.

There are also other lovely details, including original parquet floors, medallions, molding and decorative plaster. The listing says nothing about mechanicals, but the roof was replaced five years ago and the facade is in good shape.

It’s a four-story, four-family, with a single unit on each floor. So there’s refiguring off the bat, for anyone who wants an owner’s duplex or triplex.

The listing, from Halstead’s Ban Leow and Joseph Martinez, offers no photos of kitchens or baths.

The house sold in May to an LLC for $1,175,000, according to Property Shark, perhaps to a speculator who aspired to renovate it and now figures there’s a decent profit to be made in flipping it as is. Whatever the story is there, the current ask is $1,690,000.

Anyone laid eyes on the place? Like what you see?

  1. Agreed with the above. While the mantles are beautiful the layout is definitely regrettable. Even though its a nice wide house, given the location of the bathrooms, most of these units don’t even convincingly work as two bedrooms.

  2. While I also question whether this house is valued well, a four family and a one family are completely different animals. So is the amount of money you need to have upfront as a downpayment on the $1.9 mill house, as compared to the $2.5 mill. This also appears to be a turnkey so the repairs, though costly, could also take place gradually.
