Affordable Housing Brooklyn -- 437 Herkimer St in Bed Stuy

Back in May, a lottery was held for applications to 20 affordable Bed Stuy apartments at 437 Herkimer Street, with two-bedrooms priced at just $574 a month.

According to mental health services program and building operator The Bridge, the development received 3,000 applications for the 20 units. Eligible leasers had to not only be selected from the lottery, but also had to have a household income between $21,086 and $51,780, in accordance with the amount of family members and dependents.

Surviving spouses were given preference.

Construction at the six-story building was still underway during the lottery, but it has been completed. The building has been 100 percent occupied since the end of this October.

The 53-unit building is a entirely affordable, “integrated” facility which includes housing for 40 individuals with mental-health conditions, in addition to the 20 units of below-market rate housing.

437 Herkimer has 24/7 front-desk assistance, a community room and social services available to all residents.

The Bridge is currently working on another project in Brooklyn, with construction beginning by the start of 2016, but has not yet revealed further details or the property’s location.
