Gowanus Open Studios Returns: Come See Nearly 350 Artist Spaces

    by

Gowanus Open Studios returns this weekend to the fetid but inspiring shores of Brooklyn’s most notorious canal.

Nearly 350 artist studios and sites will be open for viewing from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, October 17-18. In addition, there will be curator-led art tours through the neighborhood, giving attendees a local artist’s perspective on the extreme change the area is currently experiencing.

In addition to the tours and open studios, there will also be a group exhibition opening October 15 at the Old Stone House, as well as a Beat Nite Gowanus on October 16, and an art party called Telestrations, presented by the Gowanus Swim Society, on October 17.

The Open Studios weekend comes just weeks after dozens of artist tenants at a Gowanus studio space were told their leases will not be renewed.

“While there are still artists in Gowanus, take advantage of Gowanus Open Studios,” wrote the local blog Pardon Me For Asking, articulating a feeling that in the face of seemingly endless development and resultant displacement in the area, Gowanus Open Studios are beginning to seem quite ephemeral.
