Buying a House With No Bathroom -- Is it Risky?

Ever sublet a Brooklyn apartment with a toilet in a closet and a thick-curtained shower in the kitchen? Just me? A Brownstoner reader is considering the purchase of a house with a similar setup.

I may make a bid on a house with no real bathrooms. There are two closets with toilets in them. There is a shower in another room. The house is plenty big, so space is not an issue

So I would have to layout and build two rooms that would fit everything. I have rebuilt layouts with the architects and permits in a coop, but not the kitchen or baths. Are there any red flags about this situation as far as the DOB goes? Or is it just another remodel?

Brownstoner Editor in Chief Cate Corcoran says the potential buyer must consider whether the bank will lend under these conditions, and also warns that if plumbing fixtures must be moved or added, permits will be required, which could make for a long renovation process.

What do you think? Is it worth the potential trouble? Chime in over in the original post.
