The parlor floor apartment of Gauri Nanda came with ornate original moldings and marble fireplaces typical of Brooklyn’s most over-the-top brownstones. But historic details didn’t stop the designer from transforming the space to fit her modern personal taste.

In addition to painting the entire interior a glossy white, Nanda — the creator of an iconic and all-too-effective roving alarm clock — added modern lighting fixtures, minimal furniture, and a completely renovated kitchen. The mixture of old and new comes together in this surprisingly bright and open-feeling interior that is neither sterile or cliche.

The color scheme is predominantly light and neutral with touches of gold. In the main room, the furniture is sparse, with a low narrow couch and coffee table in the center. A full-height bookcase dominates one wall.

The most ornate townhouses in Brooklyn are the 1860s Italianate brownstones with their elaborate rococo-like details such as carved marble fireplaces and foliate moldings, typically hand made on site. Such details could be overwhelming but Nanda balanced them with a restrained color palette, modern art and bold light fixtures.

The kitchen was completely renovated. The floor is made of brick pavers arranged in a herringbone pattern.

  1. I love the fact that this place is incredibly organized and clean – and not a lot of unnecessary junk or stuff.
A gold or blue velvet sofa would look fantastic in the space. But great job and a beautiful details.

  2. Love the sofa. Wish it was a royal blue to give the room some color.
the dining room light fixture is too large for table; or is it the table is too small for the light fixture?
But yet, the light fixtures are too small in the kitchen.
and I hate the shelves on each side of the range hood. Nicer without.
