A Brownstoner reader emailed us this juicy tidbit about the bar and restaurant replacing Celestino at 562 Halsey Street in Bed Stuy:

I have some news for East-Bed Stuy/ Stuy Heights readers. My neighbor, my wife and I passed by the old Celestino location on Halsey and Stuyvesant ave on Monday night and to our surprise the lights were on! We went in and had a drink. The bartender and someone else who was possibly the owner/manager were very nice and welcoming. We were told that the space is a bar (full liquor license) that will eventually serve small plates/tapas and is tentatively called “Stuy Bar.” To our eyes, the interior/exterior have not been changed since it was Celestino.

When Celestino opened in 2011, readers raved about the food from the start. It closed in 2014 amid speculation that the neighborhood just couldn’t support a seafood restaurant. A Cajun eatery was planned for the space but failed to materialize.

In May, Brownstoner reported that a French wine bar and restaurant called Stuy Restaurant was planned for the space. The owner also operates Cafe Lafayette and a wine store in Fort Greene.

Has anyone else been to Stuy Bar?

  1. I was told crepes as well – both sweet and savory. Food service is supposed to begin September 15th. I would definitely appreciate more of a restaurant than a bar. I believe the main reason why it won’t be more food focused is that there is no gas for cooking (only electric) – though I’m not sure why it couldn’t be added. By the way, Khemistry is closed, but is supposedly reopening in October (hopefully it will be better than it was before – it was terrible). Love Bar Lunatico!
