Eric Adams' CROSS Brooklyn Unveils Million Dollar Sidewalk Extension Plan

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and street-safety advocates joined at the site of a recent pedestrian fatality last week to unveil a $1 million plan to improve dangerous intersections.

The plan was unveiled at Nostrand Avenue and Avenue Z in Sheesphead Bay, where nine fatal or critical crashes have occurred this year (most recently, Carol Carboni was killed in a crash at the intersection in August).

Adams spoke of creating “bulb-outs” and “neck-downs” — otherwise known as sidewalk extensions — at five areas that have a large elderly population.

The improvement will be a part of Adams’ CROSS (Connecting Residents on Safer Streets) Brooklyn plan, a “critical part of Vision Zero” that will “improve safety with sidewalk extensions that reduce the distance required to cross intersections,” according to Representative Yvette Clarke.

CROSS Brooklyn focuses especially on Brooklyn’s youngest and oldest residents, who Adams (and others) assert are at particular risk crossing busy streets and are more likely to be involved in automobile accidents. The NYPD recently suggested a possible fix to this was putting the responsibility not on drivers but the elderly, who should try to pay more attention and wear bright clothing.

Local youth joined Adams, advocates and community leaders on the corner of Nostrand to pose in front of chalk-drawn outlines for the sidewalk’s future extensions and hold up an honorary check for $1 million, made out to “One Brooklyn.”
