It’s a tale as old as your vintage record player: A drummer and a carpenter go looking for a reasonably priced Brooklyn two-bedroom and instead end up renting a large ground-floor studio with an attached garage in Boerum Hill.

But in true Brooklyn do-it-yourself fashion, roommates Adam Finkelman and Evan Garfield transformed the apartment into the place of their dreams, as Curbed recently detailed. The garage became a space for dinner parties, band practice, and woodworking, while the duo used wood scraps from Craigslist to build out two 7-foot-by-7-foot lofted bedrooms.

Creative use of space? Another sign of the affordable apartment apocalypse?

With just a few thousand dollars, Finkelman and Garfield built out their space over a period of about eight months. In addition to creating the two lofted bedrooms, they extended the kitchen island, created a section of exposed brick in the living room, and changed the lighting fixtures.

Finkelman — a professional carpenter and furniture maker — built custom tables and chairs out of shipping pallets salvaged from nearby businesses such as Brooklyn Brewery and Mast Brothers Chocolate.

What do you think of the result?

  1. this isn’t particularly cramped; it seems spacious to me. they have a whole practice space, full kitchen, and an outdoor space! in 2006 my sister and i lived in a 12×10 studio apartment in manhattan. 2 loft beds with enough room for my art desk and her books. THAT. was total insanity. but we found way more creative solutions, albeit less pretty ones

  2. Creating a huge Fire Department nightmare and many building code violations….but Oh I forgot they are not minorities trying to create a housing for their growing family, so they will not be slapped with a million ECB violations and sent into foreclosure.
They are single, white (probably) & over 21; to coin an old American saying, so they will get away with it!
