Brownstoner Reader Survey 2015 Results

Earlier this month Brownstoner asked you to tell us about yourselves and your lives in Brooklyn.

You also gave us some great feedback about how we’re doing — what you want to see more of (renovations, interiors and small businesses, among many other topics) and less of (bye bye, Brownstoner Pets…) — and we’ll continue to keep all of that in mind as we grow our editorial content.

We also heard your excellent feedback about our listings and Forum functionality, and it’s made us even more excited to share some important news: We’re gearing up to relaunch Brownstoner with a host of new features and upgrades that speak directly to what you want to see.

So stay tuned. In the coming weeks, we’ll share more details about our upcoming full-site redesign.

For now, we’re excited to share some of what we learned in the survey.

  • Of the readers who responded, 65 percent visit Brownstoner at least once a day.
  • 20 percent of you have been reading Brownstoner for 10-plus years.
  • 93 percent live in Brooklyn, but 68 percent work in Manhattan and beyond.
  • One of the biggest changes is our readers’ neighborhoods: Today, the five neighborhoods with the most Brownstoner readers are Park Slope (13.5 percent), Bed Stuy (13.4 percent), Carroll Gardens (7.4 percent), Brooklyn Heights (6.8 percent) and Crown Heights (6.6 percent). Back in 2011 it was Park Slope (21.9 percent), Fort Greene (8.1 percent), Clinton Hill (7.5 percent), Boerum Hill (6.3 percent) and Prospect Heights (6.2 percent).
  • 74 percent of Brownstoner readers own their homes — 60 percent of those are houses, 22 percent co-ops and 18.5 percent condos. Of those who own, about 35 percent spend $5,000-plus on renovations per year.
  • Of those who don’t currently own, 39 percent plan to start looking in the next two years.
  • The top five neighborhoods you think are worth investing in in the next three to five years are Bed Stuy, Crown Heights, Sunset Park, Bay Ridge and Flatbush.
