Today’s pick is a fetching 1889 Bed Stuy brownstone that offers an interesting mix of original details and modern updating. Located at 429 Hancock Street, it’s on the market for $1,999,000.

The four-story house has an owner-friendly setup, with a duplex on the bottom two floors. It offers two bedrooms and an office on the garden level and a living room and dining room/open kitchen above. (Atypically, the dining room and kitchen are in the front.)

There’s a spiral staircase leading down to a basement with a recreation room that’s reported to be “elegantly finished,” as well as a full bath.

The third and fourth floors hold 1.5-bedroom apartments, each with a pair of original fireplace mantels, in front and in back.

All told there are seven fireplace mantels in the house. Other original details include wainscoting, decorative window transoms, ceiling medallions, crown moldings, other carved woodwork, and pocket doors and shutters.

The bathrooms are the most striking example of veering off path where traditional styling is concerned. Check out the black river-stone tiling in the bathroom off the master bedroom. In the other, note the minimalist setup and the wall of exposed brick.

There’s a lot more exposed brick — in the bedrooms and in the modern kitchen.

It’s all done with a designer’s eye, but not everyone is going to flip for, say, a bathroom done up in river stone. Your mileage may vary.

The mechanicals have been recently updated, according to the listing, from Halstead brokers Ban Leow, Kunsang Mipam Thurman, and Dave Lewin. The roof is new.

What do you think of the house, and what the owners have done with it? Is the price on point?

  1. Well, with taxes and insurance, it’d work out to $3500. And there’s the risk you’re buying at or near the top of the market.

A lot of folks here are just assuming/hoping prices will continue to rise, and we know how that turned out before.
