This three-story house at 540 Decatur Street in Bed Stuy has a lot of charm, and looks to be in great shape. Priced at $1,350,000, it’s full of detail, including pocket and French doors, a tin ceiling in the garden-floor kitchen, window shutters, moldings and medallions.

Check out the built-in cabinets on the parlor floor, and that stunning pier mirror.

It looks to have been recently renovated, and the pictures suggest a nice job was done. The house sold for $475,000 in April 2012, so it seems a reasonable bet that buyer did the work. The mechanicals and roof are recently upgraded.

There’s a two-story extension on the back that adds extra space on the garden and parlor floors.

The house is currently set up as a third-floor rental above an owner’s duplex. (The listing calls the rental a 1.5-bedroom apartment, though on the floor plan it looks like a single bedroom.) The owner’s duplex has two bedrooms, a master bedroom and a smaller one that’s only accessible by walking through the master. Which is a good setup for parents with a small child, but not ideal otherwise.

That back bedroom could make a nice office, but then you’ve got an owner’s duplex with only a single bedroom. The entire parlor floor could, of course, be used as bedrooms, although the only bathroom in the duplex is on the garden floor.

What would you do with it? What do you think of the place, and the asking price?

  1. It’s easy for us to say what they should have done, who they should have hired, etc. They probably left the layout alone because they couldn’t afford to mess with it. Moving a kitchen up a level is expensive.
